My Words

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

October 15, 2023 I wrote a poem called Where Are Your Words and expressed my feelings about J. Allen's writers block. From the time I met him online in the summer of 2009, he had always written a poem, story or an article just about every day. As he neared retirement his writings started to slow down and eventually stopped cold turkey. I have then felt as if he was not always really there, like a part of him was missing. He always said that he was content without writing. And then tonight he sent me this.
Is he back... I pray to God he is... I have always felt he was happier back then as the words flowed from his pen as if they ruled him and not the other way around. As if when his hand quit writing he would have to go back and read what it wrote...
If anyone is interested in what I wrote back in Oct. I am enclosing it after his writing. Here goes... Jan

           My Words

I sit and stare into the silence of the night that overwhelms me.
I’m looking and searching for the words that once flowed free.
Alas, I reach deep into my soul and realize my words cannot be found.
For they are in a thousand cemeteries buried beneath the frozen ground.

My words have died and they now lie sleeping in unmarked graves.
No amount of thought or effort can resurrect them for they have been slain.
Gone are the days when my words flowed like rivers of a mighty wind.
I never once thought or even slightly imagined that like life, all things must end.

So rest now my dear sweet Jan; try now to reason and understand.
Realize now that my words often grew from a hidden and unseen pain.
And that pain, like my words have been written and buried across this land.

Where Are Your Words
Where are your words that touched the hearts of those who read…
Words that inspired, that brought laughter and brought many to tears.

Some painted pictures, funny and bright.
Some showed disasters full of war and death or even strife.
But our favorites are those of love, precious and pure.
Not just of romance but also of God’s amazing Grace.

So many of your words caused those that read them to look into their minds, hearts and souls and see their true selves.
Whether they changed their ways or just ignored.
It caused them to think and even ask ‘why’.

How could they slip away from your pen?
How can you go about your day and not stop and write down your thoughts?
You ‘were’ a poet, a bard and a writer of stories.
Your words received not one but over two million views…

They came not only to read your works but many praised and valued your words.
Some cried, some laughed and some even saw red.
You made them think, to seek the answers to life’s problems. Not just their own but the problems of the world.

I watched as the words slowly left you.
It was like a death of a loved one,
You reached out and they were no longer there within reach.
No matter how hard you tried to bring them back to life, they alluded you, never to be seen, to be heard, to be penned again.

I miss your words, not just the ones that declared your undying love not just to me but even the ones of old you wrote to Leah.
It was those for her that I read before we met that showed your heart, your soul and the kind of man you were.
My friends said don’t fall for someone you have not met.
No man could be evil, cruel or deceitful that could write like that.

I love you with all my heart and soul,
You kept me on my toes with what the subject of the day would bring.
All I ask of you is
‘Where Are Your Words???

Beautiful and Powerful, my dear Bubba!

And I agree with Ron, Jan...

I understand it.

Writing was my way of life since I was 6... but at 72, I barely produce any written work.

Nonetheless, my heart and my soul still perceive and speak poetically,
and I am content.

And before I go, Happy Eleventh Anniversary on December 12th
Mr. and Mrs. Wilson!!!

Love you both,
Sis & Joe

Jan, J Allen certainly can still write from what he just sent you. But he said two telling things. First, that he wrote from some deep pain that compelled him to write. I recall all of those poems about his work and how difficult it was for him to do it because he wanted to be free of it to write. As a result of you arriving in 2009, he was eventually able to retire.

And then, you arriving in his life was obviously a way of removing all that pain that had forced him to write to get the pain gone every day. With you there by his side, he no longer felt the pain that kept him writing day and night.

It appears to be simple as that. But perhaps I'm wrong. I'm quite often wrong in interpreting what people write here. Perhaps because I don't reread and fuss over what the other intended. I just respond.

Ron
