Five Ribbons For Joe

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Most of us will see him every day, and without much thought...we continue on our way.

Poem Artwork

Five Ribbons For Joe

Five campaign ribbons and two shiny stars

Small but subtle reminders of a life once afar.

Oak leaf clusters and one Purple Heart

Reflect the bitter memories of carnage a world apart.

Ode to burnt bodies, ode to gapping wound

Ode to hollow victory with a shattered soul consumed.

So pray for him as you walk past him tonight

And try to give him due honor and subdue not his pride.

For he was just following orders, in his reason to search and destroy,

Heck, he was not even yet a man, no... not much more than a boy.

Yet, he fought on…so that many should be free,

And in doing so, he destroyed more than our mortal eye can see....

However, time is as time does, for it creeps like an invisible vine.

It leaves minute impressions in the depths of a tortured mind.

For he still fights the enemy within his volatile dreams

And from jungle to alley, five campaign ribbons does he cleave.

Allen This is such a heartwrenching poem of truth. The honorable ones that serve our contry proudly with love, giving us peace freedom and lose every bit of theirs in return. they have no peace no freedom in their minds. The Honored Veteran following orders, volunteering and giving his life his body his limbs his soul and his mind for me to have mine all in tact.
Salute!
to each and everyone of you and I thank you with all of my heart ever lasting I will never forget any of you! Thank you!

Yes the tragedy of the veteren never ends and the untold heros that turn to drink or drugs to chase away their demons and nightmares are no less heros then those who walk proud with ribbons on breasts. Well made statement Allen my friend...

Alot of "US" boys became men and some did not become more than dead, hope Joe keeps his ribbons and medals, as some have sold them to eat or drink...Ed

Sad but superb tribute to those who do battle without knowing why,but just answering the call to arms, for love of country. They deserve our honor respect and prayers. Well done Allen!
