The Bitter Heart Of man

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

To give freely with a spirit of goodwill, only to be cast aside by a bitter chill. Gives cause to wonder of what the heart is worth, as goodness is used for evil and the dark tide of the hidden heart envelops the earth.

The Bitter Heart Of man

What can prove the heart of man,

As he by another’s goodness devises evil

In which to rape the soul of the giving hand.

For it is by love which goodness is sown,

And yet still, even unto our own recompense

Is the return of bitter fruit shown.

For who can know the heart of man,

Save one, save Him who knows as we are even known.

Therefore I shall recoil from discernments gray

And I vow that I shall retreat this day.

For it is by hearts goodness which brings much grief,

It is by the sincerity of soul that brings cause to weep.

For what can prove the heart of man?

Nothing…no not anything can.

Allen, only love can prove the heart of man ...

A painfully sagacious write, Allen. You've masterfully captured the view of many herein. "...he by another's goodness devises evil..." there is an overwhelming amount of this going on in our darkly troubling times.
Much to ponder. Well done, Poet.
Peace,
Carolyn

Your poetry makes me want to weep for the condition the world is in.
I've been doing that a lot lately! Spendid poem Allen , and I certainly know how you feel!

Profoundly insightful with much beauty in its truthfulness despite the pain of the specific truth observed.

The heart is only as good as what one programs it with.

Jealousy and envy and rancor and hatred etc. etc. etc. can only become amplified when one allows it to inhabit the heart.

The mind is the battlefield, but the heart is the garden from which the fruit of who we are is ripened.

You have exposed something here that is scary!

The heart of man is in his/her trust, compassion, charity, dedication, companionship, camaraderie, attention to details, friendship, defense and love. There is a combination of hosts of the heart that makeup the heart. Such a tiny organ for the energy that is there...amazing.

You expose the rotten apple at the bottom of man's soul..
Corrupt since the day he was born..

Gonna have to disagree with the premise of this one, Al, as there has got to be a way to prove the "heart of man", as man in the generality of being human has a heart and shows it to those closest to him, so it stands to reason that proving that heart to exist should be relatively easy...(thanks for Happy Birthday wishes over the phone, you two folks are certainly a trip, LOL) Peace,

Your poem is the cry in the darkness which is not heard by many, thus the evil hearts of men are clouding their view, not the darkness. However, there is one who can save man from his bitter heart. Jesus died for that purpose. Let us live to keep that alive.
God Bless,
Lew

How very true, J. Allen.

I fear your words speak more truth than not, poet. Mankind seems to be a cesspool of hidden and not-so-hidden horror which us unleashed upon the innocent. Still, taking your words at face value, even the innocent have well-kept and hidden terror to abide.
