Ed Matlack…I Hope You Are Happy Now…

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Over the years dear Ed has on many occasions politely and endearingly suggested that “This old hippie go get a haircut.” Well Sir…this poem is for you. Oh just for your information…do you remember my sweet kitty China? Well seems that he does not know me now…(should have kept my hair…LOL)

Poem Artwork

The air was thick and sweet with the aroma from Vitalis and aftershave.

The room was bright and clean; the barber chairs just left of the hallway.

Old men were gathered around talking of war; old dogs and the passing life.

I then walked in with my long hair and beard; silence fell as they turned ghastly white.

The barber looked up at me from the customer who sat wide eyed in his chair.

He said that if it’s the Salvation Army you are looking for; it’s a good two blocks from here.

I told him in humble speak… no sir; it is not the Salvation Army that I do seek.

I then said to him that it was of his service that I was in desperate need.

The men that were gathered and once silenced from my entry into their domain,

soon began to speak again and from laughter I spied more than one refrain.

I thought of how long it has been since I had entered into such a hallowed place.

I thought of my youth and then when I went to boot and the sadistic pleasure on the navy barbers face.

Yet nevertheless here was I once again, hair down to there facing another barbers grin.

He asked polite when to his chair I did arrive what it will be for me today?

I looked into the mirror; I looked at all the old men gathered around.

And I said…I need not a trim, I need to look like the new kid in town.

So here it is I…former hippie from days gone by…my hair is all gone, my beard shaved away, no longer now can dear Ed to me now say…”get a haircut you old hippie, its no longer 1968” Thanks Ed…this song is for you…….

The Song From The Musical (HAIR)

She asks me why
I'm just a hairy guy
I'm hairy noon and night
Hair that's a fright
I'm hairy high and low
Don't ask me why
Don't know
It's not for lack of break
Like the Grateful Dead
Darling

Gimme head with hair
Long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming,
Streaming, flaxen, waxen

Give me down to there hair
Shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere daddy daddy

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

Let it fly in the breeze
And get caught in the trees
Give a home to the fleas in my hair
A home for fleas
A hive for bees
A nest for birds
There ain't no words
For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder
Of my... Hair.

Got yourself a nice summer cut huh? I wish I could have see the faces of those guys at the barber shop. It ain't so bad now is it? I remember when my hair was half way down my back. I miss it sometimes, along with those care free days when I had no real responsibilities. I really like the poem. You set the scene, and I swear I could smell that barber shop smell when I read this. Great job, Allen!

It takes great courage to do what you have done! When I did it, neither my dogs nor my cats recognized me for a week - although my spouse was quite pleased!

Luckily, hair keeps growing!

Cute little poem! We hope the cat will adjust soon. (Don't feel too bad, B. cut off all her long, long hair too). Loved it, still grinning now,

Great idea...well kitty will get used to soon huh?
Nice cut though...nice and pruned!
Yes had to do the same myself was sitting on my hair and it was getting caught everywhere not to mention having an extra space for it at night to lay out!
Whew...I missed it for awhile and still do but at the same time have visions to cut it off some more...like a few inches from my scalp...ouch I don't know I still might.
Have fun with your new look and be refreshed.

Smiles,
From the Heart...

So you did cut your hair,
And the cat you did scare,
It makes you look mighty fair,
But in my opinion you should have kept the hair...;) hehehe, Ed

J. Allen, I "still" liked the long hair because it was the real you. I enjoyed this poem a lot...it gave me several good laughs! I also enjoyed the song, "She asks me why? why? why? I'm just a hair, hair, hairy guy," I had to add my touch as I was singing it! GREAT!

Hey J Allen!
You look GREAT! I just took 7 inches off my hair too! A big change for me also! Now my husbands hair is longer than mine!
He's still holding on to those "hippie days", and rebelling against the crew cuts he was forced to have growing up!
One day~

The cat will remember you when it gets hungry...and Oh, by the way~ Ed's ALWAYS HAPPY! :)
Great write!
Love and Peace~

Ahhhh it does hurt but only for a while and when you really get brave and go the shaved head route as I did you will find that it turns back the years all of a sudden.

This is a great poem, marking not only an epic in your life but bringing memories flooding back to me of friends on similar days when they let go of their locks, knowing that it was their spirit not their hair that gave them their strength of conviction. You look fabulous Dahhling....
Take care,
Sherry
