Poem Artwork

I Dreamt A Dream

Long ago I dreamt a dark dream.
Came now dark jungles and war machines.
Gruesome images played out in my mind.
Dark creations scream peace, peace in this my time.

Smells of flesh burning, silver cinders filled the air.
Generals commanding eyes fixed daunting deaths cold stare.
Black birds with metal wings flying low overhead.
Bellies emptying the choking rain of falling despair.

Shattered hearts fill sharp the lucid night.
Run through the jungle; seek shelter till morning light.
Shadows narrowly escape down division’s long path.
Nothing left, nothing remains in dark dreams aftermath.

Yesterday, another time, long ago whispers in my ear.

Dead voices silent mute still squelch paranoids fear.

Long ago today I dreamt a dark dream….

Powerful poem, Allen. Sounds like Vietnam but with a change of geography could apply to anyplace. Strong ending, too, reflecting the dark dream.

Yesterday, another time, long ago whispers in my ear.

Dead voices silent mute still squelch paranoids fear.

Long ago today I dreamt a dark dream….

Is this Viet Nam? It makes me think of that time when I was a newspaper woman and my friends were CW2's. Love and blessings!

Scary dreamscape out of the battlefields of hell...which are what most battlefields become for the participants. Well done Allen.
