A Southern Snow

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

It started snowing tonight when I was at work, when I got home at 11pm it was still coming down. Leah snapped this picture so that all may see this Southern treat. Say we may get 4 to 6 inches...wow

Poem Artwork

A Southern Snow

Soft comes beauty in this a rare southern snow.

Crystals integrated in a surreal asymmetrical show.

scarcity befalls this gentle cool white treat.

For seldom does the south of this beauty receive.

I walked outside and stood beneath a whispering pine.

I looked toward heaven and tasted the white kiss of snow divine.

Ah, but in southern truth it will only last for a single day.

Soon the sun will appear and the whiteness will fade away.

Gone now will it be as quick as it arrived.

Vanquished in an instant before my very eye.

For our Southern snows…they never ever stay.

Except in the childhood dreams where they were made.

Beautiful, wistful, soft...almost like the snow itself.

A wonderful treat to witness. To hear the silence and see the landscape change into such a wondrous glow....

Be safe,

Thank you for sharing some of this winter delight. I'm still waiting for some snow in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Like you, ours [when we get it] seldom lasts longer than a day or two - if we're lucky. Good thing those memories still shine.

God bless you. Kathy

Well you are welcome to our Northern ones for the rest of the winter if you'd like cause we are usually buried with them and by the end of March praying foe a melt. Good write and I can understand your feelings though.

i remember it snowed one day when i lived in georgia--the world just halted for that day-it was fun to see the kids playing in it-a fun write

Grab that kid having that dream and strangle him, because after it snows in SC (rarely) it rides up the east coast and hits most states with ocean property and inundates them in white stuff...I live in one of those states...LOL, though its quite pretty in that picture, and I have never ever seen you in a jacket before...yes, yes at least wake the kid up, no more dreams of little snow events in SC...Ed

Allen - Excellent poem and appropriate, too. It started snowing here around 4:00 P.M. A sense of southern snow can only be conveyed in poetry, just as rain to one who lives in the desert. It's rare enough to be magical. - David
