The Journey Unto Eternity That Almost Never Was

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

The Journey to Tybee is to begin in about 6 hours. However it almost never happened as on Wednesday it appeared that I had a mini stroke as the whole left side of my body went numb from shoulder to foot. Thursday morning found me in the hospital with a BP of 170/100 with a heart rate of 136 plus.

After numerous tests confirmed no stroke to which I was relieved, the doctor referred me to a nut cracker (a Shrink) it appears that my stress and not eating or sleeping had taken its toll on my body to which I was medicated and sent home. I slept for 12 hours and feel better but still drained. Thanks Rhonda and Joe and all the others for standing in for me in prayer.

This will be the first trip down without my wife and though I look forward to releasing the box of memories, I do not look forward to doing this alone…never could I find anyone who wanted a free trip to Tybee….oh such a shame.

For all those who have been praying please continue that this will go well so that I may at last fulfill my promise to Leah…for a promise is a promise and a man is only as good as his word…even to those who are no longer here. God bless you all and God willing I will see you all in a week.

A  Journey Unto Eternity That Almost Never Was

Through the Carolina back roads and its small quaint towns.

Past rustic old churches leaning upon their hallowed ground.

Come memories of laughter to cloud both the eyes and my mind.

Days afore along this same road with Leah smiling by my side.

Yet now shadows move with the glancing of a cold November sun.

Whereas once upon a time not long ago; came the joy of such simple fun.

We would sing to CCR as we slid with ease down the lonely and narrow way.

Yet now, oh now I shall but meander and stop often in the silence to pray.

The Box Of memories is all packed and ready for its eternal journey in which to go.

Love letters, locks of hair, and the Kleenexes of a thousand tears that from my tender heart flowed.

Lord such is love, such as its pain; grant unto me calm gracious seas this coming day.

Give back unto me my peace, yet never let my heart from her love ever stray.

For Lord, I now deliver unto you my heart and soul as I send our box of eternal love along its way.

God Bless you Leah…remember now me…

Been following you all the way and this is the greatest thing you can do for Leah. I wish I'd done something like that for my Tom, but just going to visit his grave as often as I can I feel the need there for me to do that and find peace then too.

I truly wish I could be there, but you know why, right now, that it won't happen...suffice it to say I will be there in thought, Al...Ed

Please take care of your health.
Leah would not want to know that you are neglecting yourself this way!
Please have a good, safe trip....release your memories as promised...although you will always carry them in your heart... Thankfully you have friends and family who love you and care about you...so get strong and have courage... blessings, lindalaw

Allen, this is beautiful! I am sorry to hear that you were sick. I understand how hard it is to get up and keep moving forward... I see signs in your letter and your poem that show that your heart is healing just a little and your will to live and go on returning... You said "God willing I will see you all in a week." and... You asked for the Lord to give peace back to you... You are healing my friend and finding new resolve to live. That makes me heart even more thankful...
My prayers will go with you...
Take Care,
Cryssa

Allen,

So sorry to hear you were in hospital. When we lose someone we care deeply about, it's hard to find the will to go on. We stop caring for ourselves (I know) - I wish I could have come to Tybee Island, but having no car, couldn't get there anyway. Know you're in my thoughts, you've been in my prayers, and continue to be so ... take care of you. You matter to me, and to others who love you.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
