Living With Yesterday

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

I stand now in the somber silence of dusk at work and watch the half moon wink between the tall pines. I then mouth these words to the empty space…”Do you remember Leah, how small those pines were when I first began work here”? I do, and I remember you saying,..

”Da, do you think they will let you dig some of them up to plant in our yard?”

I laughed…yes, there was a time that I laughed, and I said…Baby, I ain’t been here two weeks yet and you are already trying to get me fired.”

She smiled, and simply said…”I just want you with me all the time because I love you so much”.

That was almost twenty-one years ago, and those little baby pines stand now like giant memories cast against the burning sky of all my yesterdays’…constant and often painful reminders of a time when I truly laughed.

Living With Yesterday

Small pink tufts lace the lavender sky,

The whippoorwill sings his dirge…

And suddenly I began to cry.

I still hear her voice as it whispers in my ear.

I still feel her hand upon my heart…

I feel her praying away my silent fear.

I see her, and I smell her in everything.

I tried to run from her very presence.

Yet, I can still hear her at night softly sing.

I stopped by to see her this morning just to talk.

“Baby, you know I will always love you, but I’m dying.

I’m dying without you…please, please let me go”.

I wanted to hear her…I wanted her to speak softly to me.

Yet I heard nothing, nor did I fell any release.

I want to let go I thought as I drove home.

I want to live again…I want to love, and belong.

So now I stand beneath the tall pines of yesterday’s dreams.

My heart still weeps, my soul still in the silence cries.

I either let go AND live, or I hold on to what was, and slowly die.

I know…oh how I know…It is only by GOD that I can again be free.

I still miss you baby….

How fortunate you are (and me, too) to have all the wonderful memories of your loved one. There is no doubt of your love, but when you say "...I’m dying without you…please, please let me go”, you must think deeply and realize which one is not "letting go". Yes, it is up to you to let your beloved Leah go on, and you will set yourself free...keeping your wonderful memories. That is from my experience, Al.

The real trick isn't letting go of the past, but in moving forward and finding joy in living. The beautiful thing is that you will always have your memories. In time, those memories will become sweet to you and the pain will dull.

So absolute in Love!
A love that will live on forever!

... and, as the tall pines sway, there WILL be a day, in its felling, when their dust will nourish on and on...
Your Leah and you, will lie together amongst the fragrant needles making the mulch to soften the fell for others! Keep writing J. Allen...keep writing!

I know you miss her, Allen, as do we, the readers who came to know and love this gentle soul through your loving words penned to and about her. Those trees stand as a legacy to you and Leah and keep your memories alive.

((((HUGS)))) love and continued prayer, Karla. :(

As always your pen writes from the heart...very beautiful. I too looked at the trees my beloved planted and wonder if I can ever let go...
