Dreams With Dead Eyes

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Dreams are strange things. Sometimes sweet, yet sometime fearful…Sunday night I dreamt of a beautiful island. It was a land with mountains; streams; lakes, rivers and an open sea. Every type of vegetation imaginable grew here…it looked like paradise. Leaving my mother-in-law and Leah behind I went in search of my father-in-law.

He died seventeen years ago while I straddled him giving him CPR. I watched his blue eyes that pleaded with me turn to gray…and he was gone. Sunday night in my dream he stood at the edge of the sea with his back turned away from me. As I approached him he grew fainter until he was gone, yet there were two sets of footprints in the sand….his, and mine.

Monday night brought the same island, yet this time he stood not alone at the edge of this endless sea…by his side was my late wife Leah. This time instead of his or their backs to me, they were both facing me with their dead eyes calling…oh so softly calling. Torn I take a step forward and then stop. Leah’s long blonde hair dances in the air like snakes caught in the wind. Though I hear not her voice, I feel it in my soul. I remember still her blues eyes as they pleaded with me to save her…just like the eyes of her father.

I turn back now and look toward the mountains and see my mother-in-law waving…waving goodbye as if she is letting us three go. I awaken with fear…now again it is sleep that I fear…but it’s just a dream…right?

Dreams With Dead Eyes

They still come often in the softness of night; images of days gone by.

Sometime they haunt, sometimes they seem precursors to a coming time.

The past screams now without voice, and their sad words fall from dead eyes.

Fear replaces my tears, and I awaken; I wonder and I ponder the remaining night.

Dreams now shift like the blowing sand and deliver new night terrors unto another land.

One night I see my father-in-law standing on a sandy shore looking out to a distant sea.

The next night I see both him and Leah; backs not turned away, but with their eyes calling me.

Eyes that once begged for my help in both of their final moments before their passing now call.

Fear grips my heart as I see them standing on the edge of an endless sea with their dead eyes.

I turn from their stare and look from whence I came and see all alone my mother-in-law.

She is waving from a distant hill, her eyes are somber, and even from the distance I see they are tear filled.

I hear her voice like a soft whisper on the wind, yet I feel Leah calling me to worlds end.

I tremble…I shake, and in a cold sweat I awake.

Two dreams…two days…no more…no more I pray.

Oh, (((Allen))),

Do not fear the sleep. Do not fear the night. You have the hope of God's love and Light. Don't give up. This one made me cry -

(((HUGS))) love and continued prayer (ALWAYS), Karla. *tears*
