The Fireflies Last Dance

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

I see the firefly on the hot southern night. I watch it in its glory as it blinks throughout the night. I ponder not only on its short days, but mine as well. Yet the firefly no mater its time…continues from its beginning to end to let his little light shine.

The Fireflies Last Dance

He is born ever so softly on a summer night’s hot dry wind.

The firefly in the thick, dark forest dances again.

Its light blinks like a thousand stars a few feet above the ground.

For it is in the hush of the forest its glory is to be found.

His days like ours are numbered; soon he shall dance his last dance.

His pale yellow light will disappear not to be seen again in flights romance.

So what are the weeks, the days, or hours of this last dance?

So what is it of ours as well, as each day we revel in chance?

For in truth like the firefly, we all shall cease someday to shine.

Our eyes which reveal our spirit will eventually succumb to time.

Thus we are to each day endeavor to reach the plateau of our forever.

Each day in which we breathe should we not like the firefly cast our light into the night?

It is by this night and these days we may also dance our last dance.

Therefore let the light of God through you shine whilst there is a chance.
