We Saved A Life Today

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

I have often been accused of having too soft of a heart. I am even ridiculed at work for loving all things unconditionally. This often brings me such sadness in that I know not how to be any other way. God knows I have tried to change…you know; to be hard and cold and live just for today…but I CAN’T…sometimes it makes me feel as if I am mad and insane to unconditionally love all creatures this way. Most men at work will laugh at me when I save a small butterfly in the plant and set him free. Yet even for the butterfly as to a kitten and even more for a human, I do so in Jesus name.

We Saved A Life Today

Today I smelled death; that sure and knowing odour.

Be it animal or human, the rancid smell of decay remains.

Thirty years or thirty days will not take from thee this sense away.

I remember burnt children long ago in a very impoverished and distant land.

I recall a burlap bag found on the side of the road with dead kittens in my hand.

I have held the last breath of a human’s life not once but twice in this my life.

I have seen demise too many times unfold before my own eyes.

I have watched many a man harden his heart to this life’s ugly truth…

YET… OH YET I WEPT

For today Jan and I saved a small, but precious life destined for certain death.

It is but another small kitten, but a life all the same that holds the essence of God’s breath.

Abandoned to die with new birth still within his eyes…HE CRIES.

Sentimental am I? Overboard with overt emotion in sentiments regarding life am I?

Or is it just that I have smelled the smell of death one too many times?

How could any of us condemn you for your great heart of compassion? God speaks through you, softhearted friend. Who would want to change you? Not I.

Sentimental? Yes but do not change that.
That smell of death is everlasting. And I love cats.
God bless,
Lew

J. Allen,

Never be ashamed of your sensitive feelings. YOu are a beautiful, caring person. The kittens are beautiful and represent beginning life.

No, this is not a pic of our new baby, it is a beautiful grey smoked color Persian with green eyes...probably 5 or 6 weeks old...Will take it to the vet tomorrow and get it cleaned up (eyes matted, ear mites, and a cough)...Can't tell what it is but if a girl then Smokey Rose, a boy Smokin Joe Wilson...will post pic when it gets cleaned up...Glad we could save its life, for life is so precious...just hope it gets along with Sparky and Katie...(Cat and Dog)
