The Battlefields of Yesterday’s Ghost

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Why must we fight war after war? Why must young men sacrifice their all while we bitch that it’s too hot, or too cold. Why must we have such short memories when it comes to freedoms call? Is it because those like I who have seen truly from within the horrors of war that we try to forget? So stand tall today and pay tribute to the VET who is within this hour and this day. Shake their hand, give them a hug. Tell them thank you, and never forget any that served out of love.

The Battlefields of Yesterday’s Ghost

From the Battle of Saratoga to the broken fields of Gettysburg.

Lay a multitude of brave souls in the shallow countryside of dirt.

Remember Omaha Beach where young boys became men and died.

Recall Korea; recall the battle of “Bloody Ridge” and its worth.

Spin forward now in a still mad world that spins out of control.

Listen to the painful cries of all whom have died.

Listen to their plea as they walk across the battlefields of yesterday’s ghost.

Remember those today, both living and dead who stood and still stand in harms way.

Remember and never forget…

The reason we still linger on is out of love for God and country…

and the soldier who gave his all…he who gave his best…

GOD BLESS AMERICA

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Remember Omaha Beach where young boys became men and died.

How sad. became men and died and on the same day.
Salute our veterans.
God bless,
Lew

J. Allen,

A wonderful tribute to veterans, and and LTC McCrae surely knows what he's talking about. I'm married to a special veteran. If only Vietnam hadn't taken his hearing.

We keep fighting in wars because man needs war, all technological advances come from war & if we didn't have a war or two to deal with, the there would be peace and that you DO NOT want as it "could" be like Nazi Germany here...just a report I did read, one that was classified, but there are ways...e
