A Lesson In Dying

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

When the end draws nigh and our eyes begin to dim. We speak ever so softly; our words never to be heard as they sleep with tomorrow. Touch becomes the conduit and whispers moan of the approaching darkness. You feel gentle fingers caress your face as words of lips fall silent, but touch sings the song of grace.

A Lesson In Dying

Eyes, they are the silent gateway to the soul.

They begin to fade with time – losing their light.

Relinquishing now do they the tenderness of their hold.

Conversation then becomes touch –

For our words fail those that to hearts so softly speak.

No more is dying worth living

Nor is it living to the death we all shall see.

Thus should not our souls ever and forever gather?

As unto the darkness which comes hither to our shore?

Should not the wanting of living surpass the will of dying?

For by this in spirits united we shall search our end nevermore.
