I’ve Almost Seen It All…

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

There is a difference between making a living and having a life. Is it better to die rich, with much money and have seen/done nothing, or die poor but have seen much and done much? Some make their career their life. Others make it part of their life. Which would you choose? I do not live life like tomorrow is the end of the world, either. We should enjoy what we have whilst we have it.

I’ve Almost Seen It All…

I have walked the paths of Jesus; I have traced the steps of the apostle Paul.

I have seen so much, from the ruins of ancient Rome, I have almost seen it all.

I’ve spent three months backpacking Canada and the vastness of the United States.

I have met untold strangers who have shared with me the food on their own plates.

I have slept on the streets in cities both big and small…

Yes, oh yes I have almost seen it all.

I’ve stood in mission lines to escape the brutal cold where they before serving dinner preached Jesus to save your soul.

I’ve drank from canteens dipped in the wild waters of the untamed west.

I have slept on reservations with the Apaches, I have followed their rituals, and I have passed their ceremonial test.

I’ve tasted the scorn from other men’s eyes; I’ve received their praise and in humility before them cried.

Oh yes, I’ve almost seen it all.

My life has unfolded like a rainbow in the darkest of night-

where a whisper tells a long story of another man’s plight.

I’ve never had much money, yet I have seen almost all there is to see.

I have hiked the Grand Canyon and have climbed mountains above the trees.

Oh God…I have almost seen it all….
