If I Were To Leave Here Tomorrow…

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Time draws nigh as the continium of cancer treatment goes on. More shots and more therapy is induced to save life…but at what cost? Is death so bad that it at times shouldn’t be welcomed? Thousands upon thousands do it every day. If we know the promise that Jesus made, should not it be welcomed?

I don’t know anymore…I still have so much to say…or at least I think I do. However I feel sometimes that it doesn’t matter that anyone should listen anyway. Thus why not should I not welcome sleep until the trumpet sounds? Therefore if I should leave tomorrow….Would you still remember me?

If I Were To Leave Here Tomorrow…

If I were to leave here tomorrow would you still remember me?

Time has bitterly taken its toll on this spirit that once roamed free.

Perhaps death is not too bad; after all there is the promise of heaven.

Yet somehow I still feel the need to see, touch, feel and speak….

So How can this be, if I without eyes...neither hands nor lips which move?

How can I do all of which I seek if I should exist no more and turn lose?

I heard a song tonight that brought to the forefront youth’s simple high.

It was within this iconic melody that I remembered and am willing to say goodbye.

So if I were to leave tomorrow, would you still remember me?

Does it matter; did it ever?

I’ve seemed to have lost for what I’ve fought.

Captured is this sad spirit which once roamed free.

Therefore perhaps death is not too bad.

If I were to leave…pray tell who would be sad?

Never mind this little broken song.

Nothing is forever except the love in which our life has grown.

Little are our dreams torn asunder at the seams.

Scant is our hope when looking at our life from the end of the rope.

I recall the high that this song does bring.

I pass on….who should care…

I suffer no more and as a bird I am free.

As followers of the Lord on high, I think we should bear fruit and be a witness for Him to our last breath. This offering is a powerful look into the soul of the one who is left behind, wondering about the future of being "alive" in Him. Powerfully written, absorbing and thought provoking.

Each one of us should continue to plow for God with whatever time we still have left down here on this earth – with the understanding that we will eventually be reunited with all of our loved ones who have gone home before us. Your loved one is no longer “dead in your past” – your loved one is now “fully alive in your future” – which is heaven.
