The Field of Silent Stones

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

The following poem is dedicated to the memory of my late wife Leah Cecile Wilson who passed away on 9/7/2008 from cancer…You will always be remembered.

CANCER a word that I have come to loathe. Now I to face that battle. This past Monday while attending a group session at the cancer center I looked at those around me…those whose cancer was very advanced and I could smell that smell on them…one I recognize so well…the smell of dying from within.

A few days ago someone asked me if I could have any wish in the world what would it be. I didn’t wish for fortune or an easier job…in fact I wished nothing for me at all. I wished that all those who have cancer or will get cancer shall not suffer but be healed. I wished that that word would become a word which shall someday read in a dictionary something like this…

1. Cancer (Latin)

(a) A disease of the past that once caused death by the mutation and growth of abnormal cells within a living organism.

(b) Eradication of cancer became a reality in the early twenty first century. (see carcinoma deaths for more information on this now almost forgotten disease.) © Wilson and Webber’s Medical Dictionary

The Field of Silent Stones

I still within my mind see the pale full moon…

Reflecting on the field of silent stones.

The eerie silence; the smell of freshly turned earth was deafening  compared to the silence -

The true silence of my now empty home.

Three years, three years now since you have, my love, been gone.

Oh of these words which fall like black tears from my pen.

How, oh how they do little to honor our life together

With all the sweet memories held within.

Your soft smile now escapes me as I thumb through the photo albums of our past.

I see a ghost standing by the open sea… I see you now only as a sweet memory.

My love for you Leah in my heart and soul will always and forever remain.

Though I’ve moved on and another love in Jan I have found,

Each September I still feel of your passing a silent pain.

On September the 6th - one day before you birthday and death.

I will begin my own journey and battle a cancer of my own.

Lest I too - like you face an untimely call to my eternal rest.

This timing - this reasoning leaves my heart and soul burnt and torn.

For I remember the fall moons pale reflection on the silent stones -

I remember…I remember the cold dark emptiness of home.

Happy Birthday Baby -

Happy Birthday in Heaven Above…

Say hello for me to Grandma and my Mom and give them as I did you all my love.
