Sunday’s Bells

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Yes, I live in a small town with only two red lights. It’s a little town where people on the street still call you by name. It’s my town that I call home; oh yes, my town where life is slow. A town where one can still hear Sunday’s Bells, and for just a moment in time from life refrain.

Sunday’s Bells

The bells of Sunday still in the soft Sunday morning ring.

Ever calling the faithful to prayer, to worship and sing.

Sometimes they toll for the fallen,

Other times they ring for those who have God’s calling.

Oh the smell of fried chicken which drifts enticingly through the air.

One still remembers the life of those and these days.

Where as a child dressed in Sunday’s finest where

after church we would run and play.

The silence of living,

Oh the joy of no deadlines to meet.

The miracle of Sunday’s Bells,

Oh the sweetness now in the Presence of His peace.

Life however is good,

Though many trials we still face.

Yet with the sounding of Sunday’s Bells

I realize the fullness of His Grace.

Excellent, Al, sounds like a nice place to grow up and live...Sea Isle USED to be that way before it went all commercial...in the winter 400 people with quiet weekends, except in the summer...this one I like a great deal...God bless...ed
