Life In The Hood - My Neighborhood, That Is…

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

My neighborhood was once filled with many retired and elderly. The yards always looked nice, they were adorned with flowers and the hedges were trimmed nice and neat…. But that was 26 years ago and those who once were are now no more. Their children sold the homes to anyone and everyone… that was when the neighborhood became known as ‘The Hood’!

The attached photo is not our street, but similar to what our neighborhood looked like years ago. I dare not show the condition it is in now… What a shame.

Life In The Hood

Boom, boom goes the rap at 3am.

Bang, bang goes a shot from a pistol in the air.

The smell of meth cooking chokes now the former smell of flowers.

Drunken curses come from everywhere.

Peace be still says my soul,

As I watch from my back deck.

The line of cars waiting for drugs to be sold.

Fights break out, the police are called.

Peace and quiet for greed has been sold.

Trash lined streets now replace once beautiful yards…

No one knows anyone,

Its as if life has been put on hold.

Now I sit on the deck on a warm pre-spring day,

Yet as I look around the ‘Hood’ life suddenly feels empty, dead and cold and gray.

Urban neighborhoods are constantly changing. Mine has changed much in thirty years. The most dramatic change I've seen is near where I worked. It went from being the kind of “hood" to an area where property values are increasing and upscale people are moving in to take advantage of lower land value and proximity to downtown.

Very descriptive and, in your case, somewhat disturbing.

A all too true poetic song. Very descriptive!

I used to live in the projects of New York.

Eventually I grew up and escaped into sanity.
But now many are coming to escape the same.
I just home this place remains sane!

May peace be with you, love surround you and blessings abound you,

John Michael

Very sadly, this same story is being repeated all across our nation in many a neighborhood. And not only are we not cherishing what we once had, we are also trashing and abandoning our once cherished pets - there is also sadly no end to homeless dogs and cats today.
