My Body Is A Cage

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Jan: ‘I was watching House the other night and at the end of the show, I heard this haunting song and went to You-Tube and looked it up and watched not only the end of the show where House is OD’ing on pain meds, but also another video of the same song with lyrics (see link below). It touched me so much as this song was me. The me that lives in pain 24/7. I showed the 2 video’s to Allen and I saw the wheels turning. I had to get him to start over so I could get the tape recorder and here is what he free versed.’

Poem Artwork

My body is a cage, racked with pain.
My mind is filled with rage.
I seek an escape that I can not see.
I know somewhere there is a key…

I search for that illusive thing.
For I know it will bring me happiness
And allow myself at once to be free.

But my body holds me in this place.
And now I must humble myself, often in disgrace.
I remember 18, I remember 21.
But my body is a cage and it seems my days are done.

But I know there is a key…
And it may be in my mind.
But I think, I thought, I wondered,
Maybe I left it behind.

So onward I go in this self-prison of mine.
I stumble, I wobble, I fall.
I seek forever, just simple peace of mind.

Oh, my body is a cage, it keeps me in my place.
It tells me what I can and can not do.
And I feel such shame and disgrace.

So grant me, Oh Lord, the freedom to fly.
Grant me the chance to spread my wings
And not in this prison of my own doing, die.

Release my spirit now unto the eternal wind.
Let me feel my youth free from this cage that holds me in.

Take me to new heights, Dear Lord.
Take me out of this valley so low.
Raise me up upon a mountain
High above the fallen snow.

For I want to reach the stars.
I want to touch the sun.
I want to feel like I once felt,
Before this body wrapped in this cage became undone.

I thank you now Lord and I hold true to your word.
I shall seek, I shall look for a safe harbor
where once again, You and I are one.

Oh my, but it's dark in here... so much pessimism. How sad.
But your free verse is magnificencent and a thing of beauty, Bubba.. and I really understand how and why you went through those valleys, feeling trapped. [I even wrote one of my own when I was 28, called Living Desolation] But like yourself.. it was the LORD who pulled me through in the end - and always!
The times when it seems He is furthest away, are actually the times He is closest..carrying us through. We just can't see it until we are on the other side of the valley!
Very powerful, and very ministering to those who will relate. I really love the irony that the LORD used it to deliver YUU.. and you actually received it as such - finally, once and for all! Hallelujah!

Keep the free verse coming as the only cage you are trapped in is that of life & the only way out of that life is death...not an alternative but an escape...but is it a better one...e
