Love Held Hostage

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Six to seven days a week, nine to eleven hours a day, week after week, month after month and my heart breaks. Jan always sends me off with a smile and a ‘try to have a good day’, then several hours later I’ll receive a text of ‘Baby, I miss you.’ And my heart breaks. Am I a slave to work, does it have its grip on me…yes, Yes, YES. But will it always be this way? Will Jan and I ever have our day?

Love Held Hostage

Days seem like nights and nights seem like days.
Weeks grind into months and months transpose into years.
Love held hostage by the force of work and fear.

If I never get to tell you how much I love you,
Take it now from these simple and humble words.
Jan, I love you more than the minutes in a day or the hours that are cumulative over the span of a year.

I cry inwardly when I can’t hold you in my arms:
My soul weeps if I hear your voice from afar.
For you are there and I am here,
Neither versus’ never for work has held me hostage year after year.

Therefore if I don’t tell you enough for everything that you for me in my life do.
Know this my love, even though separated by miles and hours my heart, my love is one with you and by my Lord made true .

So kiss me Baby as you sleep, hold me in your arms, though I be a ghost that never be near to which, to hold and keep.
I love you Jan with all my heart and soul,
I pray to God every night that my work may not once again as it did with Leah take its toll.

For sunrises came and sunsets went,
I continued and still continue to work like a prisoner of a life that has already been spent.

I love you, I love you, I love you, and always will.
I miss you Baby, I miss you so much.
I want to spend the rest of my living days feeling your loving touch.

Unfortunately, most of us have to work in order to live and enjoy all the love you describe rather than be on the street, totally loveless and alone We can't enjoy an idyllic poet's life of love and leisure.

That said, I have been retired for nearly 3 years now, spending much of that time at home. Our love life has not been enhanced by my being here all the time. But then, she is busy with her work and all the extra work required to take care of me.

It's those precious times when we take time from work and get away with our loved ones that count in the memory of time. Day-to-day being together may not be as romantic as thought.

I hope you will get some days off from work so you and Jan can hsve some great quality time together. A captivating heart without human touch is awful. I can feel the loneliness. Both yours and Jan's.
