A Reflection of Life Built Upon Strife

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Dad, I know at times our life and relationship has been strained at best. But I want you to know that as I grow older, I see life through a different lens. So many times as I gaze back upon my past, your advice and wisdom, I wish I had acknowledged so that my future would have been better than my past. Just wanted you to know how much I love you and pray for you each and every day. So the following poem, if you want to call it that, is for you this day.

A Reflection of Life Built Upon Strife

A fool was I, as I carried on my merry way,
Dancing to Satan’s music and sleeping with the devils of my youth that day.

Now I find myself in a merciless hole.
I try to stand strong; I think of your advice
And in consternation I try,
I really try to move on.

So Dad, you were right in everything you said when I was a child unto me.
I ponder; I wonder when again your face and embrace I will ever see.

Seven days a week and unrelenting work must I pay my dues to the man.
It leaves me no time for family, being with those I love in this world…I hope that everybody will be able to understand.

Sometimes I wonder if it is I who should see another day,
For you are strong and you are happy and that pleases my soul in every way.

Gloria has been good and gracious to us all,
In word and in deed.
So thank you both for all of your support,
Thank you for all the loving that you have both given forth.

So Dad, maybe some day and hopefully soon,
I will find my way out of this quandary.
And together you and I can cruise the lake beneath a giant moon.

In conclusion, I just wanted to say that I love you so much in every way.

It's great that you have a father that you can look up to and still "cruise the lake with" some day. Mine left the lake many years ago and is now long gone. But I do recall when he would take me out on the lake for a ride or to go fishing and those were some of my most enjoyable times with him. May your wishes in the poem come true.

That poor man, I feel so sorry for him having to deal with you in your crazy young days...now for the most part others of us have to deal with you in your older crazy days...Geez, I feel sorry for me now...;-) -e-
