The Swing the Day after

July the 2nd 2017 at 5:30am. I have just returned home from work and he's not here to greet me... it is silent and sad. I grab a cup of coffee and head into the back yard to sit on mine and his swing... but I sit alone.

Drops of dew hang on the overhead swing. Occasionally one will fall and hit me on the head. It is as if the swing weeps with me missing his presence as well.

I know he was just a cat, but little OJ and I had formed a ritual of sorts over the years he was here. He wasn't a ordinary cat for he would lie in my lap as we sat together on the swing and purr and smile that little sideways smile and go to sleep.

It's been 13 hours or so since he went away to the land of his brothers, but as I sit here in silence alone and with each gentle rock I take on the swing another drop of dew lands on my forehead rolling down my face mingling with my own tears.

For me, he was a soft furry pleasure that never caused any trouble. If I close my eyes, I can still see him jump the fence to come and greet me when I pulled into the drive; tail straight in the air. I would then reach down and give him a pet and he would turn and run trying to beat me to the swing.

Now only the darkness of morning, the clinging dew drops and a swing that is missing what once was. I open my eyes and he's there, but there only by the love I had for him.
Again yes again I live in a place that's all to familiar, a place where only memories remain.

Cats and dogs teach us more about loyalty, companionship, and love than do people. We realize the intensity of those relationships acutely when they are gone. But live we must, and learn we must, otherwise, we missed valuable lessons. What a heartfelt poem!

Ah, this is so tender and so invitingly human, I lost my dog and I felt pretty much like you then, there are days when she still comes into full view, I can never peel a carrot without thinking of my sweet Genie. Thank you for sharing your pet life story, healing thoughts are coming your way dear J, hugs, MR x

Loss of a loved one can bring out a beautiful poem like this in us. You will have to go to the shelter and find a replacement kitten that will not quite be like OJ, ever, but still good.

You reminded me of how Jazz, my Pomeranian, would jump up on the couch as I watched TV and not lie too hot on my lap, but close to my right leg with assurance that I was there. When he got too hot at that, would go to the bathroom and lie on the cool floor, only to jump up and look around the corner every few minutes at me to see if I was still there for assurance.

THEY say that it was just a cat or just a dog? But THEY do not know how special a pet can be. Therefore, THEY don't know and THEY live in a fog.
It does matter when whatever pet you have ends living, expires and dies. It hurts if it's a cat, hamster, turtle or a bird that fly's. What once brought much joy, comfort and love is now gone away to heaven above. Amen

I'm sure you will find another similar to this one, maybe not right away but in the not too distant future. Sit on his & your swing and think good thoughts as I bet he is thinking about you now & forever...-e-
