I Came to Visit You Today

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

My Father was laid to rest 4/29/22 with military honors at our local Veterans Cemetery. Today, Memorial Day, I went to visit and talk to my Dad. Also to wish him a heavenly birthday 6/1/22.

I Came to Visit You Today

Dad, I came to visit you today, but the wind whispered to me…” He’s not here.”
I then shouted to the sky. If he’s not here, then where.
It was then that the trees began to softly speak saying,

Look not upon the stones, nor the clay that you trod on beneath your feet.
Look past the clouds and even beyond the sky, for it is there that you shall see
Not only the spirit of your dad, but also the thousands of souls who served both God and country in times of war and in times of peace.

‘So therefore weep not’ I heard the trees as they softly did speak.
For their spirits revel now in their final victory.
For there are no more tears, no more pain, only joy and peace.

Ecclesiastes 3: 1- 8
To Everything There is a Season
1To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

I am so, so sorry for your loss. This poem is a powerful reflection of how life goes on in a better way once a soul leaves the confines of mortal life.

So deeply sorry for your loss and they are not there, they are everywhere and are only a thought away, loving you, building you and are so deeply concerned for you always. Thank you for his service.

I have not read any of your poems for some time. But I'm glad that you have shared with us this solemn occasion coinciding with Memorial Day. There is no better place for resting on earth than a National Cemetery. But your poem is not about earthly accolades. It is about your perspective of where your father now resides. At least in your heart and thoughts, forever.

Ron
