My daddy was a rambling man, a drifter some would say.

I never got to know him as he traveled on his way.

My daddy never settled long—“Hello! Adieu!  My friend.”

His feet were always itching to be on the road again.

He traveled all the highways; he knew them all by name

He passed through every northern state from Washington to Maine.

He traveled in the light of day—at night he slept alone.

He met with pretty housewives when their husbands weren’t at home.

I know I’ll be just like him and the road will be my home.

I’ll never see the same place twice—my heart is set to roam.

I’ll travel all the highways; I’ll know them all by name.
