So many songs, passed down for millennia from the ancients to the children around campfires have been lost or forgotten. Unless they are found in renewed, put on the Internet, they will be lost for all time.

Sing the Songs

Refrain

We must sing the songs before they all fade,

ones sang gleefully in the campfire glade,

beyond the memory of many a dawn,

with all of our ancestors now gone.

I'll sing them for you before we go to bed,

I can't seem to get them out of my head.

I can't remember all of the words,

I'll improvise lyrics from what I've read.

(Refrain)

I'll sing them because I know they're soon gone,

songs of the ancients who lived well and long,

their lessons in song come tumbling down wrong,

I have to right them before committing to song.

(Refrain)

With voices still clear and on my mind,

I'll sing them to all who will listen all year.

I'll promise songs that strengthen and bind,

so the children can sing them without fear.

(Refrain)

Ron,

I attended church services with this elderly woman who was 95 when she passed. She and I had always bonded well, I think because I always told her she reminded me of my mother. She got to the place that she could no longer attend church because of physical disabilities, but her mind was sharp as ever. One day I visited her at home. A relative led me to her bedroom. When she saw me, she rose up in bed and began to straighten her hair, trying to make herself more presentable. It didn’t matter to me. She was beautiful since she still reminded me of my mother. We both sat side by side on the edge of her bed, talked and laughed, even sang, and had a most delightful time. One song we sang went something like, “Old Dan Tucker was a fine old man. He washed his face in a frying pan. Combed his hair with a wagon wheel. And died with a toothache in his heel”. Some will find this silly. Others will know exactly what I am talking about. Thanks for the reminder, Ron. Your poem was a delightful read.

Salutations to Poet Ronald W. Hull.

May You enjoy an inspiring healthy and blissed week!

I did like this literary and musical reminder.

"Sing the Songs" brought many passages of my youth, and made me reminisce great moments of my life.

Poet Ronald W. Hull, Your Quill soars blown by aesthetical winds, and Your heart beats filled with ichor.

Right you are that this poem on your website jumps right out in orange on black….it glows right off the screen. But so does the concept of preserving song, these lyrics showing the importance of passing them along. Maybe the internet will preserve most of them, the way ‘Leave It To Beaver’ is right there in black and white for us elders to see. Even ‘Paladin,’ ‘The Lone Ranger,’ ‘The Donna Reed Show.’ I like the second verse “I’ll sing them for you before we go to bed.” Lots of humanity in “Sing the Songs”. ~~ djl

I love singing and I am a member of a very decimated choir (only two basses in our latest session) since COVID-19. Your poem is a fine tribute to music and song... and poetry. Love, peace, and best wishes to you, Ron,

A humble plea for all of us to listen and sing along with our own melodies. Well-written lyrics of what more of us should think about and remember.

Sometimes, Ron, the words to an old song will come to mind that, sometimes, not all the time but sometimes will bring my mind back to some lovely, or more the likely a loving thing that had slipped from all remembrance, then I will get this...? hollow? loving sensation coming from within my stomach? my heart?

Music is amazing stuff.

A song's magic is half music, half words, as in this lyrical poem. Only thing missing is the music which we can imagine.

I love it, Ron! A beautiful expression of humanity as we grow generationally, trying to carry on and right the wrongs as we go. Wow, a powerful sentiment. Isn't that part of the writer's journey—reflecting on the curves in the road and making the way a little clearer for our kids?

Many blessings,

~Ann

Wonderful lyrics with such deep impressive feelings within. As for me I love the old pirate shanties, folk songs and yes old time country music for it always tells a story.

Singing is one of the greatest therapy, and singing old songs makes us feel close to those we love and once loved. Keep singing Ron,
it will keep you young, as does writing poetry, :)

Our words are the songs that we sing to the world. Are we lost before the songs they here. Or do you not sing your own songs, remembered from the blood of you or your history. Or is one the same as the other?
