To the mind of a 3-year-old girl, the newsreel images and overheard adult conversations about war were vivid, and the dangers imminent. Those images populated my dreams for decades, taking different forms for the changing times.

Poem Artwork

I was just a little girl
When I first started
Experiencing the "dream"

Goose-stepping Nazi's
Outside my house
Marching down my street
Threatening me and
My family of dolls

Carefully lined up
On the sofa
Looking to me
For their protection

The dream changed
Throughout the years...

Protecting my parents
Then my children
Followed by the
Small toddling grandchildren
Left in my care

Now that I am
An old woman
I sit inside my home
With the drapes
Pulled tightly shut

Listening for the sounds
In the streets...

That I pray will never return

This was opposite of what I had expected with the title but it was something that pulled images out of nowhere to pronoucne the story in my mind as vividly as you had experienced it. Well written piece, Joy.

Scary dreams turn into scary memories, which in turn become scary words, or is it the other way around? Maybe the memories become scary dreams? You've captured it all very well and I agree with Edward, young minds are a sponge for information gathering. We need to be conscientious of the information they are exposed to.

Well done. Thanks Dick

We can learn from your account, that we need to carefully guide young minds and hearts in troubled times, and support them with loving reassurances of their security. And your sharing of this work opens up the shadows to the light of truth.

Joy, please don't call yourself "old". After all, age is determined by your state of mind. Think about it! And while you are thinking, I will continue to enjoy your beautiful submissions. May He bless you.

Me too, I hope you never hear them, but if you do they won't be goose-stepping, but shouting,, "Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar!"
