Poem Artwork

Out the back door of my office
and then through the compounds gate.
Lays a world I'd not expected
in this place of mountains, rock, sand.
First a Governor then Russians
engineered this verdant orchard.
Here I walk among these planted
watching those who live here always.

Huge spread out black peppercorn trees
scattered among tall green cedars.
Around smaller very tart orange
before unending olive groves.
Theres a singular pinkish peach
and the occassional white rose bush.
Long stemmed grained or wheat head grasses
clovers, heart shaped weeds and flowers.

Dark scissor tail birds on high limbs
hawks gliding on currents unseen.
Mynas call one to the other
doves, wrens and many colored friends.
A tiny large round eared field mouse
scampers about from hole to hole.
While watched by a long monitour
the largest cold natured creature.

But the orange red two striped gray
fast and climbing chamealeon.
Becomes dull dusty gray when safe
or plays king of the hill on rocks.
Red beatles and many spiders
ants galore, bees of fuzzy feet.
Red, black, tiger stripped dragon flys,
millers and various butterflys.

A true ly peaceful place to rest
if no taliband bombs explode
or sappers sneak inside the wire.
We walk here, smoke, relax and converse
of things before and wishes come.
i take pics of this peaceful scene
and write down the ideas that come
until the time when I am gone.

A lovely oasis in the midst of much disruption. I recall my surprise when I discovered an apple orchard growing in the desert in western Washington state. Coming from Wisconsin, it shattered my vision–New England like–of fruit growing in green surroundings.

Enjoyed.
