Brine spray crashing all about her
hull heaving in gigantic swells. Halyards and sheets taut and straining
tars tossed about like children's toys. Bearded grimaces fight these yards
no albatross berths this clipper. The gale blasts toward open sea
no port for yet another fortnight.
The storm passes as it had come
red pink skys on west horizon. Broken spars, torn canvas, tired men
weary sailors repair her ails. Salt sea air of calming breezes
rejuvinate those who labour. A long life spent on rolling decks
breeds weathered skin and staunch spirits.
You know your sea, Budd, but this poem
is more than just knowing, your poetic
sensibility takes the reader to an appreciation
not only of the subject matter but of the craft.
