Old Friends

About old friends.

 

Old Friends

Childhood games in

imaginary worlds,

Adolescent angst analyzed with

microsurgical cures,

Marriages met—

Mi Padrino!

Until,

Life’s separation and

War, and

Distance, and

Time weakened Bonds—

Conservative-Liberal,

Catholic-Atheist,

Differences irresoluble.

What would old childhood selves

Say?

Nothing.

They are untouched by frailties,

Biases,

And life–

Idyllically frolicking in imaginary games,

Forever perfect,

Old friends.

And they will remain so, as long as the subject of religion or politics doesn't come up. My brother recently regretted that he had lost an old friend, finding out sometime after his death because they had been estranged over politics. Even as my brother, he nearly got that way with me.

That's why, when around old friends, I tend to have old friends who are a lot like me.
