I NEVER CALLED YOU DADDY

I never called you Daddy -
it didn't seem quite right
for what you were:

A huddled figure crouching
Peter Rabbit-like among the radishes,
hiding from Mr McGregor.

Or the diminutive man
dressed in stale clothes
between wards
between latrines
between women
at the hospital...

And, in a small room
you were often a crowd,
big with confusion
and alcoholic gusto;

You weren't exactly Daddy
at those times, either.

But, where life is forever trapped
in sepia,
you look like the child I was
back then,

And I can think of you as Daddy,
knowing you were perhaps a little boy
lost,
looking for a lap to sit on
and arms to hug you -

Just like me.

Your poem is phenomenal - how you achieve such balance and perspective without dropping into emotion as I seem to is beyond me. What strikes me most is the promise and potential of the boy trapped in every man evoked by both poem and photo. Excellent work here, Kate.

I hope this painful and honest write was cathartic. Daddys are loved and cherished for what they COULD have been as well as what they were. I'm sorry for your pain Kate. I know your loss because I had the greatest dad in the world. But it seems as though you have forgiven his failings and have come at least partly to terms with his absence. Hugs...(You favor him)

Oh Kate this says so much and you poured your heart out here I can tell. The good thing is and it shines through quite well here is that you have the intelligence to figure it all out and know that no blame can correct the past. I am honoured when you call me "Pops" cuase I know you mean it as a sincere compliment from your heart to mine. Keep up the good words, Kate.

Thought you might be, Andy... there's a lot of "us" out here! And don't you worry: children are highly sensitive to the spiritual vibes surrounding situations, and I reckon you will always be and remain SuperMan to Seb - who I am sure will have picked up from his mother the REAL reason for him not being able to see you. Keep channelling the loving vibes his way and I can guarantee the floodgates will open - one day: "for everything there is a season". Konfident Kate xx

I'M THE DADDY...

This is a sad write Kate, but as you've erm, erm matured? you now see it from an old (ish) ladies view.

Sad both for parents and children. Kinda heartrending brave write.

Not seeing my son. Oftentimes wonder what he thinks too?
