Still Pondering The Moon

“Gray hairs seem to be my fancy,

Like the soft light of the moon,

Silvering over the evening of life.”

Jean Paul Richter

A full moon has always captivated me

I love to ponder this life, in the moonlight

But I really don’t know the Moon very well

Although somehow, it enchants and delights

And I’ve gazed up at that wondrous old Moon

From all over this ancient planet, that we call Earth

And although I really don’t know the Moon very well

It somehow fascinates, intrigues, and fills me with mirth

I’ve especially liked standing on mountaintops in the moonlight

Or silently cruising along a lake, in the mesmerizing moon’s glow

And I especially like listening to the coyotes, wolves, and my dogs

Howling up at that old moon, knowing something that I don’t know

Somehow, Earth’s creatures seem to be very intuitively in tune,

With all the ancient magic and marvel, of that wondrous old moon.

One of my most vivid recollections from a wilderness trip

Was camping on an island, on a most magical night in June

The moonlight was shimmering down, upon the lake surface

The night air was permeated with the ancient yodel of the loon

Somehow, Earth’s creatures seem to be very intuitively in tune,

With all the ancient magic and marvel, of that wondrous old moon.

I recently watched the movie Apollo 13, as I have many times before

Thinking of the disappointment, in their aborted moon landing scene

Those three had been so close, to actually stepping foot on its surface

And they had to sadly return home, without accomplishing their dream

And as I’ve grown much older and grayer, over the years of my life

I continue to sit out on magical summer nights, still gazing up at it in awe

With the wise old creatures of the night, and my four dogs surrounding me

Realizing, with all my supposed intelligence, I’ll never know the moon at all

But my ever eager dogs and I will be heading back to that wildwood island, soon;

I can think of no better place on this Earth, for pondering that wondrous old moon.

I have visited the moon many times in my astral travels.
Pretty cool place, but no fast food yet...

One of your best, Mr. Ed. We go from lookin' up at that wondrous lucky ol' moon to actually landing there with the Apollo team, and your understanding of the animal kingdom is a revelation. A brother to Jack London and Neil Armstrong, that's what you are!
