MOUNTAIN TIME


How they multiply
these highways of the heart:

arteries ploughing through
dross-entangled underbrush;

empty, echoing, sunfilled streets
rushed along on impulse.

Surely the heart is born
for flight as simply as
thoughts tend upwards,

this tiny fist of Houdini muscle
beating on bars
of its bony cage;

its ‘bye-bidding
hands constantly set,

steering its course
by Mountain Time.

Surely the heart is born

I have a lot of respect for that little muscle behind the bony cage. What an image! And from that enclosure, it races to the end. This reads like a stream of thought. Well done!

There is something like magic in mountain air and it is like the opposite end of the rainbow from the seashore...both places tend to allow the spirit, heart and soul to shine and that is so important. Great write sweet Kate and it is for poetry like this that I keep returning to the den....

Oh I dig road poems. What America is about. Trails carved by horse and wagon to railroads to steam engines to automobiles. This is no exception, Kate! "...the heart is born of flight" That's it in a nutshell. Outstanding metaphor and LOVE the personification in the last three stanzas...Lin

I must admit that your second stanza is my favorite...just because of that word "dross." Such a little used word, and yet one of my favorites. :~) But, I also love the second to the last stanza because of the nostalgic note that it gives to the last stanza.

At first read I wasn't sure if I liked how each stanza could almost stand alone, as it didn't seem to flow like some of your poems...but then I realized that all in all; although each stanza offers its own little insight and twist on things, they are all inter-connected and related. Superbly done.
