It was a great sadness to learn of the loss of dear George J Carroll - on my mother's birthday, as it happens. My thoughts are with all who love and remember him with fondness.
For George J Carroll, much-loved poet on AD
I shall never forget your kindness
to me: alien, green Brit
in the bright constellation
of your stellar city.
Or that train rumbling along
the Long Island track,
you meeting me, knocking me back
with your breath-taking bear-hug
the strength of a man half your age!
Your family’s Levittown welcome,
a tea of English predilections: Earl Grey,
Cheddar cheese, cucumber sticks
before the clack-clickety-click
back down the rails
to Manhattan book fairs and sales.
Then the surprise package arriving
in England – who can this be from? –
which I drove to claim from customs:
a box five feet by three (bigger than me!)
containing Titanic, beautifully modelled,
her voyage safely made and intact…
But much more than that:
your poems – clear, honest,
always your own, honed,
collected into your many
books of ‘Thoughts’ and
dedicated always to your
‘Loving Bride Florence’
who, even though separated
by death’s cross-currents,
remained your actuary,
anchor, life’s sanctuary.
Thank you, George, for your shelter:
the wisdom of your life-affirming words;
the warmth of your friendship,
your faithful support for us,
your AD fellow-writers’ herd.
Thank you, too, for your light –
the light that radiated
from your bodily strength
and features; inner light, too,
that you were never afraid of
but freely shared, nurtured.
The light which will always
be shed abroad in grateful ways,
which remains to brighten
the uphill paths of all our days;
rays of your generous gifts
which forever encourage us to shine,
what once was ‘yours’ now turned to ‘mine’.
The ‘hill you climbed’ has now
plateaued at its glorious zenith,
greets you with its long-awaited dawn,
its arms open wide:
Rest in peace, dear friend,
reunited with your eternal Bride.
Lovely tribute, Kate. Sigh... l left in a huff years ago and didn't look back. Yes, he was a kind man and mentor to all of us. My condolences to his family and friends. (Hugs) Travel well, George.
I never knew George had passed, so sad to hear this dreadful news.
He was a wonderful human being, dedicated poet and sincere Author's Den friend.
I will miss him.
Your tribute is beautiful, Kate.
God bless you
Dear ole George, a war hero and a genuine gentleman
He's using his strong arms to hold his beloved Florence.
Peach of a picture of you both.
You've captured his, sprightly, essence remarkably well.
Hmm, I wonder if they understood your plumb English accent?
Kate, thank you for this wonderful tribute! I remember George well. He will be sorely missed! Love the picture as well! Kindest regards and condolences. Jeff Mason
Dear Kate, Andy Told Me George Had Passed and That You Had Penned A Farewell To Him. It's Wonderful. Yet One More Glorious AD Poet, Gone. Rest in Peace, George. And Kate, Thank You Very Much For This.
I do recall some of the messages he wrote to me. I did not know that you are able to visit him while coming to New York to the book fairs. That picture is priceless.
While George, like many others disappeared from here one day without explanation, I knew that at his advancing age, he would eventually have to stop writing. So it is with regret that you inform us of his death.
I always look forward to your postings. And especially, this one.
Gosh I didn’t know he’d died. I love his poetry—and his sweetness in general. He always had a kind word to say. I don’t get on here much anymore, but I shall miss him all the same. —Charlie
This is my personal inspirational book of poetry. It contains many poems written for family, friends, and relevant life situations. Hopefully you will find some that will encourage and inpsire you in whatever arena you are found in your circle of l
Welcome!
The poems in this beautifully bound book are a result of over twenty years of observations. Observations of the world around us and on the telecommunications network. All of the hate, love, heroism, disasters, and those who help.
