Villanelle : Teach not a dog how not to bark
(This dog the mawkish villanelle baulks)
.........................................................by T. Wignesan
Teach not a dog how not to bark
...Dogs bark for a lark in the dark
When Masters mawkish dreams embark
Do dogs bark to ape human talk
...Or wake Masters to take side-walk
Teach not a dog how not to bark
Each dog howls up some Jack’s Bean Stalk
...For the wolf in the dog must stalk
When Masters mawkish dreams embark
Do dogs bark to make the dingo baulk
...At some sick Master’s leash-end talk
Teach not a dog how not to bark
Each dog lifts its leg at some bark
...Don’t preachers too leak after dark
When Masters mawkish dreams embark
Every dog knows it must bark
...Every dog knows its own bark
...Teach not a dog how not to bark
When Masters mawkish dreams embark
Trees have bark. It is interesting that wolves cannot bark, but dogs, who come from wolves can and do. I don't think that dogs mimic humans except to be part of the human pack. I think barking is dogs' way of communicating generally how strong and big they are when confronted with challenges to their territory. Humans have a difficult time figuring out barking and how to stop it.
Some dogs can't bark and/or can't howl. My little Pomeranian would bark viciously in a high-pitched tone whenever he felt in danger or his territory threatened. But would calm down if you remain calm and just touched him anywhere where he could feel your gentle presence.
One night, out of the blue, he perked up from his usual resting place and leaned back and howled a long mournful howl. Some distant dog had revived his primal origin. Never heard him do it again.
