Perhaps it is the subtext that took me by surprise, but the depth this short work of art lowered me into was profound. If one takes the subject, "symphony" and substitutes any number of other art forms, this bit of melancholy has many legs for traveling back into the memories of past disappointments. Thank you, Diana, for posting.
Thank you, Richard and Ron. The impetus is just as Ron perceived it to be, as I forgot about that song ‘Lady in Red,’ but surely recognized it from the YouTube video I saw once I read your review, Richard. That video showcased some very stunning artwork from a myriad of artists unnamed. I’m enamored with sheet music — how complex it can be, what magic it spells out, and watching Wolfgang’s inky fingers, writing, writing, in the movie Amadeus. This painting expresses the genius of it all for me. ~~ djl
I too, like Richard, looked up one of my favorite songs, to see if it was a symphony. But as I remembered, just a very popular song when it was released in 1986. So, I think you are referring more metaphorically of the lost love of a composer driven madly to write a symphony of a woman he couldn't have.
Your image is beautiful and matches your poem perfectly.
About 1988, my girlfriend and I, a professional dancer, traveled to Elgin Illinois to my nephew's wedding. That evening, my twin brother with his girlfriend who happened to live in Elgin, took us to a hot spot by the Fox River. I could barely walk at that point and couldn't find a place to sit down in the crowded bar. Roger told us that the band would play any song requested.
My girlfriend requested Lady in Red and suddenly the whole dance floor was filled with dancers. She held me up as we had nearly no room to dance. She always held me up when we danced and we both loved that song, symphony or not.
The London Symphonies version of the old pop song 'Lady in Red' is an uplifting piece that I revisited this morning. Don't know if that was your intent here, but I came away blessed nonetheless. Your painting, (the unkempt composer superimposed on what appears at first glance as chicken scratch) is an effective visual metaphor. Thanx 4 sharing. rlc
