There is such a fine line between being on one side of the disease and the other...

Poem Artwork

the old man once had a home

a lot like the one he now can see

he rolls a home made cigarette

and rubs the pain from his arthritic knee

there’s holes in his old boots

that let the icy cold inside

his coats a ragged thrown out scrap

but he gave up his sense of pride

he’s sees the lights of Christmas

sees the kids playing round the tree

through the window sees his past

and sips some cheep wine slaps his knee

somewhere he may have grandkids

oh he knows he’ll never know for sure

he gives a little wave and smile

as a child stands there in the door

Thanks for this vivid reminder that Christmas is an internal, not an external, feeling.

And we need to be reminded time and time again of the plight of those who will certainly not be over-indulging any of their senses this Christmas; who, in fact, will be "celebrating" with nobody but their imaginations, fears and pains, perhaps. Wonderfully expressed in such a tangible picture. I keep promising us as a family to give up our Christmas Day to go share with the local hospital or old folks home... but it hasn't yet happened. I think Christmas as a social celebration causes more pain than happiness, actually - having, as you say, lost the true spirit of it... we need to think, think and think again... then keep thinkin some more, perhaps, until we act on what we're thinkin... and blowing raspberrys at consumerism... Your compassionate heart and eyes miss nothing. Bless you, Pops. xx K xx

Felix,
It's way too easy to spend the holidays shopping and busying ourselves with the details to make our Christmas seemingly flawless.
But the truth is, anytime we turn our backs on the less fortunate, we are turning our backs on humanity. One never knows what life is going to hand us...that could be us someday in that ragged coat.
Thanks Felix for the reminder, God Bless and have a 'real' Merry Christmas.

Hello Bro,

This is an interesting piece. I just finished a 5 show run preforming as Scrooge. The transition from Scrooge to Father Christmas was fun. I was the only adult in a cast with 54 kids. Christmas Spirit Lost has a lot of similarities to The Christmas Carol in That Scrooge lost the meaning of Christmas and life a long time ago. Luckily he found it before it was to late for him.

I pray we all find the meaning of Christmas in our hearts and express it in some way throughout the holiday season and the year to come. I hope your comrades in the Author's Den will find it in their hearts this Christmas not to pass by those less fortunate than themselves without at least wishing them a Merry Christmas and perhaps offering to buy them a hot cup of coffee. Perhaps a donation to a shelter for the homeless or to the food bank or visit the elderly.

Love ya Bro

John
