Mother and Father's Farm

Mother and father was how we referred, for reasons unknown to me now, to our father's parents.

Poem Artwork

Mother and Father’s Farm

The lane was long and winding,

from the road to Mother and Father’s farm

Barb wire fences and strawberry plants

framed it all the way up to their  barn

The soil was rusty red and coated

all that comes in close contact

Potato plants grew high and strong

hay grew in the field out back

The farmhouse smells drifted invitingly

ginger snaps, home made bread

Fresh butter, farm fresh eggs and

buttermilk churning in the shed

The cows grazed in the pasture,

pigs in a pen, chickens ran everywhere

Barn cats and a big old mangy dog

even one old sway-backed mare

We called grandparents Mother and Father

they spoke a funny kind of talk

Sometimes they’d talk all in French

which was a little bit of culture shock

Lots of pretty young cousin girls

and boy cousins who knew a lot

Like how to stash some beer away

that at parties parents soon forgot

These were such wonderful memories

of that Island I truly blessed

The old homestead is gone now

Mother and Father in Heaven rest!

Oh, my grandparent's farm is gone too--to housing development. We all greived it. But the memories will never die, they were some of
the finest of my life. Thank you for bringing me home again, Felix!

This is a Norman Rockwell painting in poetry. This is an excellent folk verse and the images we can touch and smell and makes our hearst ache for the love of the homeplce. felix...this is incredibly warm and homspun folk story quality. It will live on for immortality.
peace!

Felix,

You've taken me to Mother and Father's farm with your glorious imagery and verse; well done!

The images come right to me...as if I'm right there. It's truly wonderful when a family can share love, and a bit of their history and culture.

Hi bro, brings back memories. God, you did like Mother Perry's ginger snaps. I loved the fresh brown eggs, and even though the wild strawberries were small they were sweet. As kids I loved the old hay loft, and going to bring the cows home from pasture.

City kids in the country. When you're kids it's ok to have a crush on your country cousin, (I had an eye for Mary)

You haven't written an "Ode to our little shack out back" the one that Dad built us as a playhouse, sleeping out in it or the big slab of Mom's home made bread which she would toast in the old range in the back porch before we would go out to bunk down. Great old memories.

lov ya,

John

It sounds like you've described Anne's Green Gables farm on PEI. How lovely that must be. This is a sweet and relaxing write, and a lovely trip down memory lane. Michelle
