Last Will and Testament

A shiny, plastic, see-through envelope

Laid so neatly on his desk in sight

Perhaps he left it there as a reminder

Of how he’d lost the last will to fight

She picked it up and read the words

Last Will and Testament…beneath his name

A tear splashed on that plastic sleeve

As she wished for someone she could blame

Their years summed up on lawyer’s paper

The total worth of her man’s demise

To an aching heart who’d known real love

The trappings all but just a thin disguise

She slipped the paper from the envelope

Something fluttered lightly to the floor

Fearfully bending down she picked it up

Her broken heart finally alive once more

For there written in his shaky hand

Was his caring message from the past

“Sweetheart I leave you all my love

that though eternity I know will last.”
