Black Day Song

By: Felix LeRoy Perry

I thought things couldn’t get any worse

but it seems like destiny had other plans

for now I think I even hear the hearse…

the reaper holds the winning ticket stub

with my name fancy etched all in black

his other hand a plain brown paper toe tag

says he’s going and never coming back

let the pipers play a dirge on a hillside

to the cadence beat of Thompson drum

bury me down by the beachstone shore

maybe toast my passing with a tot of rum

please speak kindly or not at all about me

if you all should gather around in my name

nay find comfort in the laughter of a child

let not my failings be a source of shame

the sun goes down on all that stood before

so too shall it rise again when I am past

but mayhap a tiny spark shall still remain

of me in other hearts will somehow last…

I think we all hope to leave a part of us behind, Fee. You capture these sentiments perfectly. A somber poem with a deep message. Great writing. Hugs,

Dark and powerful--certainly hope this isn't personal--you'd have plenty of people pouring a libation offering on your grave!

Wow, well done, not a happy thought for you know that you would be missed by many. It is something I think that many our age...do think about perhaps when illness falls. I always just hope it's sudden, quick, and since all my paperwork is in order, in one folder, and directions known, it will be easy for them. Good write, LadyJ

Your poetry is always so amazingly written. You are so versatile and I learn so much from your words. Love this one, Fee, but the reaper isn't in your house yet, you have too much to live for!

Much peace, love, and light,

I can hear the lungs of the bagpipes and I get all choked up. There's just something mournful here that makes me desire to hold closer to my friends.

I think we all have that hope but alas it also fades away with each grave that is dug.
