Night Sounds in a Small Town
Darkness slides down the evening sky
elongating shadows until they blend
seamlessly into darkness
concealing a small town till dawn
As the clock tower strikes the hour
night rhythms begin
as traffic sounds begin to quiet
From far away you hear
the lonesome wail of a train whistle
echoing across the tree tops
mixing with the clip clop
of an Amish buggy
passing by downtown
A dog barks in the distance
as crickets and tree frogs
add to the musical sounds of the night
The scent of honeysuckle
lingers lazily in the air
drifting by on a soft breeze
Lights dot the darkness
blanketing the landscape
like twinkling fallen stars
The gentle squeak of an old porch swing
adds another sound to the evening concert
letting the viewer enjoy
as a restful quiet is found
joining the rhythms and scents of night
so unique to a small town

Of course, the description "Small Town" requires definition. I met my wife in a "small" village on the Winnebago Indian Reservation in Nebraska 62 years ago. A sign proclaimed, "Population 125." But never once did I see more than about the 50-60 that were gathered together at a basketball game. Once. In that little village, any night sounds at all were rare, although several times I did hear a dog bark. (But maybe that's cheating.)
The imagery of your poetry is magical and powerful, Carole. Love it!
