From small beginings

Poem Artwork

Shaping Time

The flint-knapper, knees hidden ‘neath hide

chipped  a new axe from time.

Shards of millennia flew wild,

nesting in a ruddy beard that

shaded a face as old as rock…

Clack! Clack! Clack! Stone on stone,

needles and drills from antler and bone.

The cackling campfire spoke in sparks,

whilst nature listened

to the sound of the new found

and shivered.

Eyes that studied stars looked on intelligently.

A knowing smile crossed that cracking face

as sinuously skilled hands fell silent

from shaping the destiny of a race.

Brings me back to school field trips to science museums, nose pressed to the glass, wondering, wondering, trying to imagine those long ago days that brought us all to today.

You bring ancient history alive, Paul! The imagery is outstanding. I have arrowheads that are a million years old. My father found them near the river. You can hold them in your hand and literally feel time. Allthough they are valuable, I will never part with them. Thank you...

OOOOOOooooo!! This neatly takes the mind to places which, to my shame, I need to consider more often than I do. The Romans have always impressed, of course, with their sophistication, but this puts into perspective the "setting apart" of the mind of man for "higher things" right from the beginning... and look what we've done with it?! Yup - both sides of the coin, good and bad. I'm awed by this. And your treatment of the subject does it justice. You are both reliable witness, articulate commentator and poet, Paul... quite a staggering combination... is this the man who was berueing his lack of purpose just a few days' ago?!... :)) Kate xx

Tuberculosis: The Greatest Story Never Told by Frank Ryan

The heroic story of how a small group of people, few of them TB experts, found the cure for the greatest killer in human history. But the battle needed to be extended to all sufferers. Why have we failed to take the miracle to the developing world?
