Poem Artwork

I.

Colorwise, your earth-lovely hands

are nothing like

the dispassionate blue gaze

of bare evening sky weeping

revelations at your feet.

But the ambitious immensity of it

is very much

as your hands once were

loving one infant after another:

7 boys and 7 girls,

wrapping the blanket

of your blackwoman’s reality

around each of their minds

the way the air and heat and clouds

of this planet

circle oceans and continents

with their affections,

so have you cradled

our sorrows and glee.

II.

Some of us you saw blossom

then wither beneath

the merciless sun of oppression.

These are the facts minus sentiment:

3 of the boys, 2 of the girls,

your womb a victim

of america’s fondness

for dead black babies,

3 boys dead, 2 girls dead,

your mother and father, 4 brothers dead

and both younger sisters all

citizens now of the grave

and yet through your body

entire generations have crossed over

to defy the illusion we call death.

III.

Your children stare at you now

and find themselves confused

by their split perceptions

of a woman whose dwindling form

mocks her expanding spirit.

4 pills just to say good morning.

75 units of insulin

to help you manage a smile

and we keep looking in your eyes

as if staring down a road

searching for images from your past:

a much younger mother

5-feet-11,  jet-black hair

flaming like a river down your back

so much pride in your steps

that someone named you “Chief”

and proclaimed you ruler

over all things humane.

Your children find themselves confused

by their split perceptions of you.

But the one singing entered last

through the gates of your flesh

and the singer sees you

as you have always been:

an African womanchild

running naked through a village

with ghosts crackling in your hair;

a little wisegirl preacher

in the backwoods of Georgia,

chewing on lightning and spitting out prophecies;

a celestial Amazon, so far from home

so far so far so far from home,

your soul looks back

and wanders past Jesus.

The singer is looking at your hands

and the sky flowing beneath them.

Your years are begging to be held

and it is time to make time for you.

Bathing my arms in the waters of this prayer

it is time to make time for you.

You, my friend, never cease to amaze me and touch my heart. Would that all sons could see their mothers in such a joyous and strong light. Your mother is proud of you and knows your words. She swallowed them.

Once again I'm stunned to silence - not easy to say much when stunned by a tribute such as this. Such a powerful and passionate and courageous write, Aberjhani. You have touched many deeply and profoundly. I'm so sorry for you lose, Aberjhani - she now rests happily in the arms of her maker - smiling down at you.

God bless, Aberjhani.

This is a deeply moving and poignant memorial to your late and great Mum, Aberjhani
I know how you are feeling, I too lost both my Mum and Dad, no words
can describe the indescrible pain and anguish, however I have stuck to the task since then, as they would have it, there is no other way brother, me must press on to the mark in our Lord Jesus Christ, knowing full well that in the fullness of time, we , the survivors of our parents, will be reunited with them in unbounded joy and triumph in the Celestial City !

Such an incredible tribute to your mother!! It is always such a pleasure to see family still the core of our being. I am sorry she had such hard times...and I hope that in her new adventures she finds softer places and gentler lights then those this world provides. May you find solice in her strength...and in the strength that most of the world is truly good, though perhaps sometimes we fail to see. All good things to you, fellow artist and traveler in this strange land.

"The singer is looking at your hands and the sky flowing beneath them. Your years are begging to be held" - even as, like fresh and running water, they trickle through your fingers... but my, what a tribute to the source and energy of them - and their hope and spirited essence live on and continue to water the lives that she touches through you, her son. What a Song... what a Singer. What mother could ask for more? What son could settle for less? This is MAGNIFICENT in its breadth and scope and is like Blake's "universe in a grain of sand". My heart, soul and loving thoughts are with you and your family at the time of this your great loss, Aberjhani. May your paths of needful mourning be hallowed, and your vales of remembrance, sweet. LOL and prayers, Kate xx

Aberjhani, you have made me see and feel your mother, feel her encompassing love and abiding grief at a world over which we at times have no control. What a comfort her sons and daughters, and especially you with your magic words from the heart, must be to her. I have lost 2/3rds of my family in the past few years, and my mother is the deepest loss and sadness, although I glory in having been her daughter, and dwell on our times together. Your words shine. Peace. Joyce

Privileged are those that will miss the Commander’s departure, for they have a Model to follow... Blessed are those that cry for Her Sublime absence, for they will remember how to be a Commander.

Rejoiceful I am, for the life span of a great Spaceship was completed and given to eternal bio-recycling as designed, and a new mission was assigned to its Commander... Gleeful I am, because I was given the privilege to know that the Commander’s new assignment is to return to the Cosmologic Headquarters to teach future Commanders how to fly within the Earth atmosphere and deal with its environment. Happier I am, for the departure of this Commander means fulfillment of an exemplary life of COURAGE, DISCIPLINE, DEDICATION, WILLINGNESS, DEVOTION AND LOVE.

I enjoyed the reading of "WillieMae Sketched in Years of Blue".

There are no words for the deepness of sorrow we feel when someone who was so ingrained in our life steps across the holy line into the Kingdom of Heaven. There are only words for the praise of a life lived as she chose to live it; for a spirit that soared and a soul that ran through the lush forests of time, even while her body lay transitioning, half crossed over, half remaining behind. A piece of her lives within each person she touched with her life and her soul now sleeps in the tender embraces of God's loving arms. My heart weeps the bitter tears of sadness for you in this difficult time, when you are forced to let go of the hand that led you through the pebbles that lined the beginning of the pathway of your life.
Take care,
Sherry

Would that we all could project such emotion, detached just enough to see the whole picture, but so intimate as to be able to shed real-time tears for the world to see, when death comes to call our own loved ones. But then, it is Aberjhani we are talking about here, a powerful voice to measure up to. A fellow poet's sorrow for your mother's passing.
