Poem Artwork

What is in a face
In the furrows
that time and trouble
have tractored so deep?

In the two blue moons
filmed with milky opalescence
No bitterness has taken root
Only sadness

And a sweetness of soul
that has grown rich in deep soil Heart of gold Beneath the dry, cracked crust

Beauty has many faces
Some nurtured by greif and pain
that will not be eroded In the cold rain of indifference...

This is an email I received just this morning from the photographer of "Homeless Mike":

Thanks, Linda, Nice work and thanks for your comment on Mike's image. We have this interesting connection. Mike is a very talented charcoal artist and gave me permission to photograph him on the condition that he can sketch me. We are both Veterans in our fifties, I am formerly homeless and a disabled Vietnam veteran. And Mike will simply say that he finds walls too confining. I think that because we have this comfort level makes for the honesty of the portrait. Thanks again for your interest in Mike. Respectfully, Leroy Allen Skalstad

*Wow, the original draft of my poem contained a line about artist's hands, but I wanted to concentrate on the face so I left it out...LG

I love this one, Linda. The true face of beauty, one that has survived life at its best and worst. Very nicely done.

Faces that are "lived in" are absolutely THE best (I have to say that as I now have the face of a cat that has had nine!!) Fantastic visual and sentiment, Linda, and your final stanza could stand alone as a verse that speaks volumes and needs to be heard by many. TY Kate xx

A face can be so obviously beautiful that makes many forget all about looking any further... and yet, sometimes, there is an even greater beauty waiting to be discovered inside. This is as true as that beauty that sometimes is disregarded because it hides behind a not so beautiful face. Indeed, Linda, beauty has an infinity of faces... if we will only care to look beyond. What a magnificent poem, and what an endless universe of beauty implicit within the lines of this exquisitely beautiful face!
