children's poem
I like it at my Gramma’s house
It’s my favorite place to go.
She has lots of fun things there
Things to play and help me grow.
She has a special cabinet
She always lets me see.
It has books, and toys, and dolls
She says are just for me.
She lets me choose the books we read
I like the poems best.
First we read Dr. Seuss,
Then we read the rest.
When I start to cry, she picks me up
And whispers soft and low,
“You are my little Buttercup,
And Gramma loves you so.”
She calls me lots of funny names
Like Bird and Piper Roo.
Like Jellybean, and Baby Girl,
Sneezle, Schmoop, and Lucy Dew.
She gives me all my favorite things
Like puzzles, balls, and blocks.
She hands me all my clothes to wear:
My shirts, my shoes, my socks.
She makes it be a happy place.
She wants to laugh and play.
She says I mustn’t frown and cry.
“Do that some other day!”
There’s a special room at Gramma’s house
Where I play with wooden pegs.
It’s a table that’s turned upside down
With a sheet across the legs.
It makes a secret hiding place
That Granpa never finds.
He hunts and never sees me,
But he says he never minds.
It’s ok if I always win, he says
’Cause I’m quiet as a mouse
He says one thing he likes the most—
There’s no crying at Gramma’s house
I love to read about the mice
In my favorite book,
Who hunt food in the kitchen
That they can find and cook.
I like to go in Gramma’s kitchen.
It always smells so nice,
Like cinnamon and nutmeg
And ginger and allspice.
She bakes me cookies, candy, and cake
And gives me her special treat,
The cookies shaped like Christmas trees
My favorite thing to eat.
The thing I like most over there
Is how Gramma teaches me
My colors and my ABC’s
And how to count to three.
There are places I have to go sometimes
That make me feel so sad,
But Gramma says “Don’t worry, Bird.”
“It won’t be so bad.”
So those times Gramma cheers me up
Shows me pictures of that mouse
She says I must remember this:
There’s no crying at Gramma’s house.
Reviews of "There’s No Crying at Gramma’s House"
New Poetry by Ellen K Hatcher
"There’s No Crying at Gramma’s House" shows the richness of togetherness and the grace of love. I have enjoyed the reading of this wit-wise composition, for its contents and family's values.
In gratitude and admiration.
