My grandparents culture lives within me.

Poem Artwork

I cry!

I see pictures of Rome and I see my ancestry.

I see me...

I cry!

I visit my families homeland in Italy.

I see me...

I cry!

I travel within Sicily and Naples and I feel happy and free.

I see me...

I cry!

I eat with other Italians and we wine and dine until three.

I see me...

I cry!

Why do I cry?

I really don't know why.

Perhaps it's a Spirit from the days of old.

I feel it's a Spirit planted deep within my soul.

All I know is through all of these countless hours.

I feel the eternal love of my grandmother and grandfather.

Amen...

to be humbled by the knowledge and spirit of ones ancestry...this is a privilege and gift that only 'tears' can honor.

John,

I also have a poem of this same title. I too, think of my Grandparents and miss them terribly. They will always live in our hearts.

Nothing wrong with you at all, my friend. A simple and deep, true kinship.

Because you have kinship with them and touches you.

I am Italian, too. While my background is primarily English and Germanic, since the Romans conquered both, killed all the men and impregnated all the women, I am as much Italian is anything else.

I have wondered too where does the pool of sorrows come from
and why do we cry over beauty too, not just grief...
We have all these answers inside us, hidden but still there
we are jewels of discovery John

I feel very connected to this poem. My family is from the same city so I go to the cemetery and see my father, my aunts, my grandparents, great-aunts, uncle and aunt I never knew, cousins, my families history on my dad's side is all in that old, cemetery. Maybe that is why I find peace in a cemetery. The only saying is true, the dead don't scare me, it's the living, but that's for another time. At home I have things that remind me of going to my grandparents, of my great-grandmother, small things, a canister where the playing cards were held, costume jewelry, old city plans that my grandfather helped build. You remind me that my family history is around me always.

One cannot separate oneself from those we know and love or from the country that was once our home. It can be an emotional experience.
