Writing a book is kind of like giving birth
When it comes out, you know how much it’s worth
Like a newborn baby, to you, it’s a priceless work of art
You watched this process of growth, right from the very start
The pain you suffered, the nights you tossed and turned
It’s all over now and you can reflect on how you lived and learned
It’s been both a nightmare and a life-long dream
But now that it’s over, you have time to spare, and so it seems.
Yes, the chapters have all be written and revised; book is completely done
But the process of marketing and selling has really just begun
Now is the time when many authors get sad and somewhat depressed
Why won’t the world buy this precious gem that’s straight off the press?
So now you’re told you have to spend money to make it, but that can get really old
Especially when you spend big bucks and hardly any of your books have sold!
So you swallow up your pride and say it’s worth it and you would do it all over again
Yes, you will write a better book, perhaps with the help of a loved one or a friend.
Amen!

Computers and online, POD publishing has made it possible for anyone who writes to publish. Prior to that, unless one paid big bucks to a vanity press, someone, an editor of whatever media, a newsletter, anthology, quarterly, newspaper, or book publisher, had to review the work and determined whether it was economically worthwhile to publish the work, because sales determine whether or not most publications existed. Still true today. That process prevented most of the publishing that is being done today. In spite of our hard efforts at writing our books, all it takes is money to get published. POD publishers make their money on packaging our books and not on sales.
So what determines if your book will sell? Popularity. Popularity can be achieved by notoriety (who must I kill to sell my book?), already being famous, or, as you have stated, marketing.
I will venture to say that if your book is good, the few people that buy and read books today will buy it and read it because it is good, not because you sweated nights writing it. The old cliché still is true––the cream rises to the top. Sure, they have to know that the book exists. But if the book is on the Internet and people are searching for a subject, they will find the book. But will they read it? They will buy the book and read it because they have a compelling reason… That's all.

Almost all my books have been printed by them. Finished product is OK by me. They are for my family and friends.
