A elderly professor came up to me and told me that what he says to his students does not matter that much. "They are already doing fine without me, they don't need me" he told me. I just looked at him and reminded him of his youth. Kind words of encouragement can make all the difference in the world. Don't ever think what you say does not make a difference. I believe in the saying, "To the world you may be just ONE person but to ONE person you may be the world!"

What we say matters so much Things that we do should follow We can brighten the day with a few poetic lines We can also crush people’s feelings with sorrow Encouraging words are like sweet music to the soul Mean words sound like trash from wasted sump Uplifting words can give us peace and hope Hash words can drive us down in the dumps We must choose our words wisely, with utmost care Just as we care for our loved ones and friends For we are all interconnected in this ball in the sky We can make a better world for all in the end. ...it is possible to learn "adequately" from an uninspiring
teacher...but WHY...be a part of the same-old mediocrity...never
going beyond the self-imposed limitations...
In your poem, John Michael...on the other hand...we've found
encouraging words and messages...to follow up...

I am surprised that a professor told you that. But, in a way, it is true. I had many professors in my long academic studies. I found that I learned the best of them and the worst of them. Textbooks meant little to me, what mattered was what the professor taught and how it was taught.

Constructive criticism through active grading is a way to improve students' understanding. And I'm not talking about grading multiple-choice tests by machine or graduate assistants. After learning that a high percentage of today's professors are adjuncts, with no benefits, low salaries and the resulting low self-esteem, I have no doubt that some professors feel that just being classroom monitors and not getting into the difficult task of really teaching, is all that they are fit for.
