First there is a building, then there is No building, then there is.

There was… It was… But it’s gone.... First there is a building Then there is No building Then there is. First there is a building Then there is No building Then there is... If you leave town Demolition takes place It’s happening all around. At a very RAPID PACE… If your gone for a week or two Buildings sprouts from nowhere It’s like magic! It’s NEW! It’s progress; have no fear! There USED to be a time When you can keep up with change Buildings USED to be renovated They were upgraded, re-arranged Now the buildings that were here Moved away to make space There is little time to recall For what was past, is now ERASED………………. © JMD

One person builds a restaurant. The next year, the restaurant is torn down and replaced by a different one. No one worries about waste, about salvaging the kitchen or tables. Everything is thrown away. A disposable society.

So true. I would like to see all buildings he raised from hurricane and flood prone areas. The FEMA buyback program needs to be increased.

On the other hand, I remember my first trip to Houston to a AAAS annual meeting in the venerable Shamrock Hotel. A local landmark. Ten years later the shamrock was gone, along with thousands of other aging buildings in a city that is more likely to bulldoze and start over than to renovate anything.

At our university, there was a two decade struggle to get a new technology building. Ten years later, it was torn down for structural problems. During my 30 year tenure, the law school building was renovated three times. Flood damaged twice.
