Poem Artwork

They autopsy violated bodies
of insomniacs and schizophrenics
to know if they died of hunger
if they died of wealth
if they died of terror, or
if they died of life.

Others, busy, devise strategies,
make stories in glossy magazines and newspapers
about unexpected alliances between stars.
Invisible ink prints stories on invisible minds
in mute pulp--recycled, redistributed--
if  lucky, in bestselling books.
The special scavengers,
burning midnight oil!

Unable to fit in these cities and mansions
I question my voice,
my language, which has never
transmuted into elements.
I question which I is I—
the one scribing
or the one hidden inside?

the poem is NOT ecphrasis or mimesis, not any kind of interpretation of the art. ..

Thank you for clearing that up, Debashish. :-)

This is it: the question of which I is I and we all go through it from time to time, at least those of us who don't fall into cookie cutter molds easily, and then the ones who are easily molded to fit in with the rest of the cookies try to tell us who question our I that we have a disease. ;-) Oh, you've given me more to ponder.

The subject matter of this poem reminds me of a tiny piece written by Jorge Luis Borges - "Borges and I". This whole area is totally fascinating - even as we write autobiographical fact, are we "living" the experience or commenting objectively about it and therefore shaping our perception of it into a fiction of sorts? Personal reality, personal subjectivity/objectivity is a permanent dilemma, I find... so your mention of the dissection of insomniacs and schizophrenics I find to be spot on - hence LOVE the developed theme and idea behind this one, Debs. The first stanza is a whole book in itself and sets the grey cells to work. I find the "They" and "Others" a bit mixed in terms of personages, and the special scavengers, too, take me off on another tangent. But I like the anchoring back of the whole topic into the "I" and the voice of the final stanza. A great poetic mind-game, for sure! One of life's mysterys and riddles. Does the hand hold the globe or the globe the hand?! TY LOL Kate xx

I question which I is I—
the one scribing

And that is definitely a most interesting question for us all, Debashish.
