Old Cowboy’s Lament
Cool night breeze
Caresses wind burnt skin
Pond water tries to freeze
Winter’s creeping in.
.
Frost sketches on window pane
Crisp evening stars peep out
Watching sunset wane
Old eyes glance about.
Another winter setting in
Dry hardwood piled high
His tired body old and thin
Lets out a weary sigh.
Soon the snow will gently fall
He dreads being alone
Long gone friends no longer call
Doesn’t really need a phone.
All the dreams are dead and gone
That hope for a better day.
Another winter oh so long
Wood fire keeping cold at bay.
Yes once he loved
And could sing a song
Oh how fast time has shoved
All those years fast along.
Now he’s old and days are long
I ask him what he would change
If he could write a new song
And roam again on a new range ?
Ah young fellow , you make me think
If only I could have that choice .
His shaking hand pours a drink
He continues on with shaky voice.
First I would pray more
Then I would help more
Next I would give more
Then I would do more.
I would work harder
I would work longer
I would work smarter
I would work for myself.
I would love more
I would play more
I would travel more
I would see the ocean.
I would love only one woman
I would have 10 children
I would treat my horse better
I would drink less.
But you know young fellow
Life is what happens to you
While you are making all
Those plans. Have a drink ??
